Follow the Progress

The Airport Authority has created a number of ways to keep you informed during The Green Build construction. Why? We want to be sure that construction-related activities have little or no impact on your experience at San Diego International Airport. Maintaining our award-winning customer service rating is of the utmost importance to us, and we want your traveling experience to be the best it can be.

As construction activity picked up steam in this spring, the Authority launched e-mail construction alerts to inform people headed to/from the airport if they need to allow a little extra time to accommodate construction activity at or around the airport. You can sign up for these timely alerts by clicking here.

In addition to this website, there are three easy ways to stay in touch and up to date on all that’s happening with The Green Build. Choose the one that’s most convenient for you.

  1. Facebook
  2. Twitter (@SanDiegoAirport)
  3. E-mail alerts (sign up at left)

Those interested in learning about The Green Build via telephone can call the recorded construction hotline at 619-400-2288. You can leave a message and someone will return your call within one business day.

What Makes The Green Build Green?

The Airport Authority is committed to being a good steward of the environment and reducing the airport’s carbon footprint. In fact, SDIA was one of the first airports in the nation to adopt a sustainability policy, and just this year the Airport Authority received its fifth – and third consecutive – “Recycler of the Year” award from the City of San Diego. The Green Build is the latest demonstration of the Airport Authority’s dedication to the environment.

From the beginning, the Authority set out to design and build the terminal expansion with an eye toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions, focusing on ways to decrease energy consumption, among other opportunities.

The Green Build will incorporate sustainable design principles with the goal of meeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification.

So what does LEED certification mean? LEED is a nationally accepted certification that promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Some of the key opportunities for incorporating sustainable design principles and LEED guidelines into The Green Build, include:

  • Decreased water usage
  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Use of alternative energy sources

Big Opportunities for Small Businesses

The Airport Authority’s Small Business Development Department has teamed up with the design-build contracting teams, Turner/PLC/FCI and Kiewit/Sundt, to raise awareness of opportunities for small, disadvantaged, women-owned and minority-owned businesses to get involved in The Green Build. The project will create approximately 1,000 construction-related jobs at peak construction!

If you are interested in more information on small business bid opportunities for The Green Build, contact the Small Business Development Department directly at (619) 400-2568 or complete an online Vendor Registration Form. You will be notified when bid opportunities arise in your field of work.

Spotlight on the USO

From 32nd Street Naval Station to Camp Pendleton, you don’t have to be a local to know that San Diego County has deep military roots. The Airport Authority is honoring that history and the military’s strong, continued presence here in San Diego County with the construction of a USO center as part of The Green Build.

Nearly 100,000 service members and their families travel through San Diego International Airport each year. Currently, they are welcomed by the Neil Ash USO Center, which provides amenities such as a children’s play room, Internet access, coffee bar, lounge and showers. USO centers around the nation provide our military and their families with a place to relax and connect with other military service members while traveling.

The new USO center will be the largest airport USO center in the nation. Military families will enjoy a new outdoor area with picnic tables and lawn areas for relaxing, as well as many other features.

The current USO has been temporarily relocated to the West end of Terminal 1 during the construction process. For more information about the USO, please call (619) 296-3192. We look forward to welcoming our service members to San Diego and honoring their service with a new, improved USO.
